Taco HTML Edit is a great, free HTML editor application for Mac OS X.
What is so good about this application? Well, it’s not just the price. “Free” doesn’t always mean “good.” But when you mix “free” with “good” you get “yummy!” Taco HTML Edit appeared to be a single-page editor when I first tried it. You know the type. Something akin to using Textedit to build a web site. Yeah, not going to happen. Sure you have used Textedit to edit an HTML document here or there, but as a full-time web site editor - no. So, when I first loaded Taco I thought that’s all it was. Later I discovered the Open Project Directory option on the File menu. Wow. I was reminded of Adobe’s Dreamweaver application at this point. My full site was available in the left view pane. Upon clicking on a file - whether HTML, CSS or PHP - it would appear in the window on the right for editing. Now, I have talked of my desire for a great WYSIWYG editor for web design but this application is not a WYSIWYG editor. It is designed for hand coding of web pages. Since I am also a programmer, this application appeals to my technical/coding side.
While writing this little review I discovered another gem of a feature in this free editor: Preview & Live Preview. Preview does what you might think - it shows the page in your default browser. But, what I did not know is that if you have PHP script it properly preprocesses those PHP commands. Live Preview breaks your editor page into two panes. The top pane contains your code while the lower pane shows the results of that code and it updates as you code.
For a free application, Taco HTML Edit is full of useful and powerful little features and it loads extremely fast on my 2GHz/2GB RAM MacBook.
Check it out at Taco Software today! Definitely worth the download.
