For RSS reading I have been enjoying NetNewsWire for quite some time. I used it back when it was a paid for application, but now it belongs to Newsgator and is free. Check it out at www.newsgator.com today.
What do you need a news reader for? Well, for reading news, of course. It makes it easier to scan the headlines of many different magazines and news sites when you subscribe to their RSS feeds. All the headlines appear in your RSS Reader. You can categorize them via the type of news if you like. I have folders for financial news, tech news, Mac news and Mac software as well as some others. It makes it easy to see all the headlines in one place.
